These criticisms usually compare LoK to ATLA. So, let’s review here…

So right now we’re in the 6th episode of LoK, which is halfway through the first book and a quarter of the way through what the whole show is initially supposed to be. So if we were to put that into ATLA terms, we’re about the…

Just made this now. And it’s exactly how I feel about The Legend of Korra.

Avatar is NOT an anime!

I’m just blowing off some steam here, don’t mind me if you’ve got places to be.

I’m getting sick and tired of people calling Avatar an anime… cuz it’s not! It’s far more than that. It’s animesque, a combination of the best of both worlds: Western and Eastern animation. I know it leans more on the Eastern side… but no, just… no. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not prejudiced. If it were a good anime with good animation and didn’t waste my time with pointless explanations I would definitely fall for it. I’ve only come across one anime that I liked, Death Note. That’s saying something because my dad is an otaku so believe me when I say I’ve seen more than I can handle.

Avatar is not an anime because of numerous reasons. First and foremost, the flow of the episodes. It doesn’t start-off with an over dramatic opening with a song that doesn’t even fit the show that spoils major parts of the story. The recap doesn’t last 25% of the episode either. And of course, the episodes don’t end on irritating cliffhangers ever single time.

Another reason is animation. Notice how the characters are not seemingly cardboard cut-outs with lips that only move in two frames that aren’t even synced with the voices they’re supposedly producing. The characters in the legend of korra are too animated and life-like when it comes to movement to be anime.

My biggest point is the flow of fights in Avatar. They are absolutely nothing like anime. Most anime promise explosive, hard-htting action and high-speed movements. Most of the time that is clearly not the case. Most anime deliver fight scenes with long, tedious explanations that take up to nearly 70% of the scene, with only 30% of actual fighting. Animation during fight scenes are crappy too. Avatar is different, very different. The fights deliver what anime fails to. They’re beautiful, well-choreographed, fast-paced, and most importantly, smoothly animated.

I honestly still have quite a bit more to say, but I’ll spare you the details. I believe I’ve made my point that Avatar isn’t an anime.
